Until the state manages to open recreational cannabis dispensaries, the only way to legally buy cannabis in Virginia is to purchase it from a medical marijuana dispensary. Purchasing recreational cannabis from an unlicensed grower is still illegal. You may grow your own, however. Adults over 21 may grow up to four plants per household (not per person.) It is legal to GIVE your cannabis away, or accept a gift from another person, but distributing or selling the cannabis for any exchange of value remains illegal without a license and subject to felony or misdemeanor charges.
