In Virginia, medical marijuana patients don’t need to bring much when they visit a dispensary, but there are a couple of essentials. The most important item is a written certification from a licensed Virginia practitioner, which serves as proof that the patient is legally allowed to purchase cannabis. Alongside that, patients must show a government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport to confirm their identity and age.

Since July 2022, a physical medical marijuana card is no longer required, though some patients still choose to carry one for convenience. If someone is acting as a caregiver—called a registered agent in Virginia—they must also bring their own authorization paperwork in addition to the patient’s certification. With these documents in hand, patients can purchase a wide range of cannabis products at licensed dispensaries across the state.
