In Virginia, the state doesn’t use the word caregiver — instead, it calls them Registered Agents. A registered agent is someone who helps a patient (like a minor or an adult who can’t manage on their own) get and use medical cannabis legally.
Must be 21 or older.
Must be chosen by the patient (or the patient’s parent/guardian if the patient is a minor).
Can only serve one patient at a time.
What You Need to Do
Get designated: The patient or guardian names you as their registered agent.
Apply online: Fill out the caregiver/registered agent application with the Virginia Cannabis Control Authority.
Provide ID: Submit a valid government-issued photo ID.
Background check: Pass a criminal background check.
Approval: Once approved, you’ll get documentation showing you’re legally allowed to act as the patient’s agent.
What Registered Agents Can Do
Buy medical cannabis at licensed dispensaries for the patient.
Help administer cannabis products (like oils, capsules, or flower).
Make sure everything follows Virginia’s medical cannabis laws.
