Iowa has enacted limited protections against employee drug testing, but you can still be terminated if you test positive for any drug, including cannabis. Your company must have extremely clear guidelines for testing, though, so you should contact an attorney if you have been affected by workplace testing for cannabis. For example, you have the right to pay for a retest if you want to contest a failed drug test, and the employer must reimburse you if you test negative on the retest. A recent case ruled in favor of an employee who was fired for testing positive for methamphetamine because his termination notice didn't clearly state the cost of retesting. Random, suspicionless drug testing is only allowed in limited circumstances, such as for safety-sensitive jobs. A recent case ruled against Dollar General for firing employees that were merely working in a warehouse but didn't have safety-sensitive duties. (Source: Seyfarth.com )
